Chapter One: The Returned Book

Mara put the book on the counter.

“Don’t open it,” said the note.

She checked the return slip. It was dated tomorrow.

Chapter Two: The Empty Shelf

The next morning, Mara looked for the book’s place on the shelf.

A narrow gap waited between two green volumes.

Inside the gap was another return slip. This one had no date.
