What is BSR?
Best Sellers Rank (BSR) is Amazon's way of measuring how well a book sells compared to others. It's calculated based on recent and historical sales, updated hourly.
Where to Find BSR
Scroll down on any Amazon book page to the "Product Details" section. You'll see "Best Sellers Rank" followed by the number and category.
How BSR Works
Amazon's Best Sellers Rank is updated hourly and reflects recent sales relative to other books in the same category. A lower BSR means more sales. The #1 book sells the most in its category.

How the BSR estimate works (July 2026)
Amazon updates BSR hourly using recent sales weighted over historical sales — that much is documented. The conversion to units is not, so this tool fits a piecewise power-law decay through anchor points that publishing data trackers report consistently for the US Kindle store, then scales by format and marketplace volume:
Rank 1–100: daily sales ≈ 7,000 ÷ BSR^0.42
Rank 100+: daily sales ≈ 76,900 ÷ BSR^0.94
× format multiplier × marketplace multiplier
Example 1: mid-list Kindle title
BSR 5,000 in the US Kindle store estimates to about 25 sales per day, roughly 750 a month — a book earning real money without ever cracking the charts.
Example 2: genre chart contender
BSR 250 estimates to roughly 420 sales per day. At $4.99 and a 70% royalty, that is about $1,400 a day before advertising costs.
Example 3: the long tail
BSR 120,000 estimates to about one sale per day — the widely cited threshold where a book still sells daily but no longer sustains ad spend easily.
All outputs are estimates. Kindle Unlimited borrows, price changes and hourly volatility all move rank independently of paid units, so use ranges and compare books against each other rather than trusting any single number.
What is a good BSR on Amazon?
In the US Kindle store, a BSR under 10,000 generally means strong daily sales (a dozen or more copies a day), under 100,000 means consistent movement, and above 500,000 means occasional sales. Context does the real work: romance and thrillers are so competitive that 50,000 is midlist, while a specialized professional title at the same rank may be the category leader. For research, check a competitor's BSR at different times over a week — a stable 20,000 tells you far more than a launch-day spike to 900 that decays by the weekend.
BSR vs category rank (and that #1 badge)
The store-wide BSR and the category rank answer different questions. BSR compares your book against the entire store and drives sales estimates. Category rank compares it against one browse category and drives the orange #1 Best Seller badge — attainable in a small category with a handful of well-timed sales. That is why “bestseller” claims need scrutiny and why picking accurate, reachable categories matters more than picking impressive ones. Use our category finder to see where your book can genuinely compete, and read estimates only from the store-wide number.
From BSR to revenue: chaining the calculators
Unit estimates become business decisions when you attach money to them. Convert a comparable title's BSR to daily sales here, then multiply by its price and the royalty its author likely earns: 70% minus delivery for a $2.99–$9.99 Kindle book, or the tiered 50%/60% minus printing for paperbacks. A niche where the #5,000-ranked book clears an estimated $50–$85 a day is a niche that supports new entrants. If the whole first page of results ranks worse than 200,000, the demand may not be there — a cheaper lesson to learn from rank data than from a finished manuscript.
FAQ
Amazon BSR questions, answered
What is Amazon BSR (Best Sellers Rank)?
BSR is Amazon’s hourly-updated ranking of how a product sells relative to every other product in its store — the Kindle Store, Books, or Audible. Rank #1 is the store’s current best seller. Every book with at least one sale gets a BSR, shown in the Product Details section of its listing.
How accurate are BSR-to-sales calculators?
They are estimates, not measurements. Amazon has never published the ranking formula, so every converter — including this one — fits a decay curve to community-observed data points. Expect the right order of magnitude and useful comparisons between books, not exact unit counts. Treat single-day snapshots with extra skepticism.
What data is this calculator based on?
A piecewise power-law curve calibrated in July 2026 to anchor points repeatedly reported by publishing data trackers for the US Kindle store: rank #1 around 7,000 sales per day, #100 near 1,000, #10,000 around 13, and #100,000 near one sale a day. Format and marketplace multipliers scale those anchors.
What is a good BSR for a book?
As a rule of thumb in the US Kindle store: under 10,000 indicates strong, consistent daily sales; 10,000–100,000 means steady movement of one to a dozen copies a day; above 500,000 usually means occasional sales. Genre matters — a romance at 50,000 is unremarkable, while a niche technical title at 50,000 may lead its category.
How often does BSR update?
Roughly every hour. Amazon states that rank reflects recent sales most heavily while also weighting historical sales, which is why a single promo spike can move a book thousands of ranks in hours and then decay over the following days as the recency weighting fades.
Why does my BSR swing so wildly?
At high (bad) ranks, sales are so sparse that one purchase can jump you tens of thousands of positions, and a day without sales drops you back. The deeper you go into the rankings, the more volatile the number. Sustained velocity, not single sales, is what stabilizes rank.
Do Kindle Unlimited borrows count toward BSR?
Amazon does not publish the weighting, but KU activity is widely observed to influence Kindle rank — enrolled titles routinely hold strong BSRs on borrows alone. That means a low BSR does not always mean high revenue: page-read income at $0.0042–$0.0049 per page differs from sale royalties.
Is category rank the same as BSR?
No. BSR is the store-wide rank; category rank is your position within a browse category like “Cozy Mystery.” The orange #1 Best Seller badge comes from category rank, which is far easier to reach in small categories. Sales estimates should always start from the store-wide BSR, not a category position.
Do free books have a BSR?
Free Kindle books rank in a separate Free store with its own list. A #50 free rank means many downloads but zero revenue, and when a book leaves a free promotion it re-enters the paid store, usually far from its free position. Never mix free and paid ranks when estimating sales.
Can I estimate a competitor’s revenue from their BSR?
Chain the tools: convert BSR to estimated daily sales here, multiply by the list price, then apply the royalty math from our Kindle or print calculators. A Kindle BSR of 5,000 suggests roughly 25 sales a day; at $4.99 with a 70% royalty that is about $85 a day before ads — an estimate stacked on an estimate, so use ranges.
Does the same BSR mean the same sales in every marketplace?
No. Smaller stores need far fewer sales for the same rank. The calculator applies marketplace multipliers — the UK store at roughly a third of US volume, Germany lower still — so a #1,000 rank on Amazon.co.uk represents materially fewer daily sales than #1,000 on Amazon.com.
How do I improve my book’s BSR?
Consistent daily sales beat spikes. Price promotions, well-targeted Amazon Ads, an email list that buys on launch day, and a steady release cadence all feed the recency-weighted algorithm. Chasing rank for its own sake only pays if the rank converts to visibility in categories and also-boughts that drive organic sales.
