How the crossword generator builds your grid
1. Anchor word
The longest answer becomes the first horizontal anchor, giving later entries several letters at which to attempt a crossing.
2. Legal crossings
Each new word is tried at every shared letter, perpendicular to the word it crosses, and rejected if it would touch a neighbor and create an unclued letter run.
3. Compare candidates
The maker tries up to twelve seeded layouts, stopping early if every entry fits, and keeps the result with the most placed words and smallest bounding box.
4. Numbering
Starting squares are numbered in standard row-by-row order, and clues are sorted into Across and Down lists automatically.
Where this maker honestly stops
This is not a fixed, rotationally symmetric newspaper grid. It builds an open layout from the exact entries supplied by the user and has no larger word list available to repair a difficult corner. Every accepted result contains a connected crossing, adjacent unclued letter runs are rejected, and any entries that do not fit are reported for review before printing.
Clue writing: the difference between a quiz and a puzzle
Definition clues — the workhorse
"Closest planet to the sun" for MERCURY. Direct definitions work well for study material. Keep them concise enough for the printed page, and do not put the answer inside its own clue.
Fill-in-the-blank
"___ Wars" for STAR. This clue type provides a different retrieval task from a definition. Use it where the completion has one clear answer for the intended audience.
Example clues — for teaching
"Whale or bat, for example" for MAMMAL tests understanding rather than recall — a classification task rather than simple recall. It can suit science or language review sheets when the category is clear.
Wordplay — season to taste
"It has keys but opens no doors" for PIANO. A little misdirection makes adult puzzles memorable; too much frustrates. One or two per grid, and keep them fair — the "aha" should feel earned.
Agreement matters more than cleverness: plural clue, plural answer; past-tense clue, past-tense answer. And if you use factual material, begin with a reliable reference, record the source beside each answer, then shorten and rewrite each clue for the intended solver. Solve the finished grid against that source before distributing it.

A fixed newspaper-style grid starts from a designed block pattern and is filled from a much larger candidate list. This maker starts with only the answers you provide, so it builds an open connected layout instead. It rejects a result containing only the uncrossed anchor and lists entries that could not join the connected grid.
Why were some of my words left out of the grid?
A word can only join the puzzle by crossing a letter it shares with an already-placed word. If "XYLYL" shares no letters with anything on the grid — or every shared letter creates an illegal collision — it goes to the unplaced list. Fixes: hit Regenerate (a different layout often finds room), add words with common letters (E, A, R, S, T), or swap the loner for a synonym.
Does the puzzle print with an answer key?
Yes. The default print includes the empty numbered grid with clues on page one and the filled solution grid on its own page. You can also print the puzzle only, and each clue shows its answer length in parentheses.
How many words make a good crossword?
The maker accepts 3 to 40 unique entries, with each answer normalizing to 2–20 A–Z letters. Start with a small set whose answers share common letters, inspect the reported grid size and unplaced list, then add or replace entries. More entries do not guarantee a denser result because connectivity depends on the letters and legal crossings.
How do I write good crossword clues?
Match clue style to purpose. A study puzzle can use direct definitions such as "Organelle that produces ATP". A recreational set can mix definitions, fill-in-the-blanks, examples, and wordplay. As a mechanical check, avoid putting the answer in its own clue and make the clue and answer agree in tense and number.
Can I make a crossword for the classroom with this?
Vocabulary terms and definitions can be entered directly, and the answer-key option lets you keep a filled copy. Regenerate reruns the layout with another random seed, but a different grid is not guaranteed; compare the versions before distributing them.

What is the difference between this and a criss-cross or fill-in puzzle?
A criss-cross gives solvers a word list and an interlocking grid to fit it into; a fill-in gives the grid and words but no clues; a crossword is solved from clues.
