BISAC Code Lookup Tool

Write a one-sentence subject statement without marketing language: what the book is about, who or what it focuses on, and whether it is fiction, reference, instruction, biography or another form. Search the central concept first, then move from broad headings to the narrowest accurate option. The correct code describes the content readers receive, not the audience the publisher hopes to reach.

For a cross-disciplinary book, decide which subject controls the structure and most of the pages. A business memoir, for example, may primarily be biography even when it teaches lessons; a workbook about personal finance may belong under finance rather than general self-help. Use the table of contents as evidence when two headings seem equally plausible.

BISAC, Thema and retailer browse categories serve related but different systems. A distributor may request BISAC codes, while Amazon presents its own category selector. The wording can overlap without producing a one-to-one match. Keep a metadata sheet that records each system separately so an update to one field does not silently overwrite another.

When preparing Amazon metadata, use the Amazon category finder for the live retailer taxonomy. When preparing ISBN, distributor or catalog records, return to the current BISAC list and confirm that the heading has not been replaced. Metadata should be reviewed when a new edition changes the subject or target market.

• Use additional codes only for meaningful secondary subjects
• Avoid codes based solely on sales aspirations
• Document why each code was chosen for future editions

A subject code cannot compensate for a title, description and keywords that promise a different book. Compare the selected heading with the cover language, subtitle, table of contents and retailer description. If those assets point to different audiences, fix the positioning before distribution rather than forcing the code to bridge the mismatch.
