Scribd no longer sells a book subscription. Its ebooks and audiobooks moved to a separate brand, Everand, and in 2025 Everand dropped unlimited reading. Kindle Unlimited is $11.99 a month for unlimited borrowing, 20 titles at a time. Everand's $11.99 tier buys one book a month.
That is the whole comparison in 2026, and it is not the comparison most articles are still making.

What actually happened to Scribd
Scribd split itself into two products. Books, audiobooks and podcasts moved to Everand; scribd.com kept the user-uploaded documents and SlideShare. Same login, different sites.
Then the model changed. On 1 November 2024 the company announced it was ending unlimited reading, and existing US subscribers were converted at renewal through 2025. What replaced it is a credit system Everand calls unlocks:
- Standard, $11.99/mo — 1 unlock
- Plus, $16.99/mo — 3 unlocks
- Deluxe, $28.99/mo — 5 unlocks
An unlock buys one book from the 1.5-million-title catalogue, and you keep access to it as long as you keep paying. Unused unlocks now roll over for up to six months. Alongside that sits a rotating set of 20,000-odd titles, Everand Originals and podcasts you can read without spending an unlock.
Run the per-book maths and one thing stands out: Plus works out at $5.66 per unlock, Deluxe at $5.80. The most expensive tier is the worst value per book. Pay for Deluxe only if you genuinely finish five paid titles a month and want them all live at once.
Two other things people get caught by. Sheet music and magazines were removed from Everand on 28 January 2025, including copies users had saved and downloaded — so if sheet music is why you were looking at Scribd, that reason is gone. And scribd.com still sells a subscription, also $11.99 a month, but it is for documents and SlideShare decks. Two different products, same price, similar name.
In June 2026 Everand bundled Fable Plus, the paid tier of the Fable book-club app, into all three plans at no extra cost.
What Kindle Unlimited is in 2026
$11.99 a month plus tax in the US. Amazon's figure is more than 5 million ebooks, audiobooks, comics, manga and magazines, and you can hold 20 at a time with no due dates — return one, borrow another, as often as you like.
The audiobooks are not a separate library. Borrow an eligible ebook and the narrated version lands in your Audible app; return the ebook and the audio goes with it. It covers thousands of titles, not the whole catalogue.
Magazines changed in April 2026. Good e-Reader reported that from 22 April, US members pick individual issues rather than receiving them automatically, issues count against the 20-title cap, and anything borrowed before that date is removed from libraries by 22 July 2026. Amazon's help pages block automated checking, so treat that one as reported rather than confirmed.
If you want to pay less than $11.99, prepaid plans exist — roughly $65.95 for six months and $119–$132 for twelve — and Amazon runs heavy trial promotions around Prime Day and Black Friday.
Which one fits how you read
You read three or more books a month, mostly indie. Kindle Unlimited, easily. Unlimited borrowing at $11.99 beats one unlock at $11.99, and the KU catalogue is built from books enrolled in KDP Select — heavy on romance, fantasy, thriller and self-published non-fiction.
You want current Big Five bestsellers. Everand, and specifically Plus at $16.99. Those titles are exactly what sits behind unlocks. Kindle Unlimited mostly does not carry them, because traditionally published books are rarely enrolled in a programme that demands Kindle exclusivity.
You read one book a month. Neither subscription is doing much for you. At one book a month Everand Standard costs $11.99 per book and Kindle Unlimited costs $11.99 per book, and in both cases the book vanishes when you stop paying. Buying it outright is often cheaper and it stays yours.
You mostly listen. Everand's unlocks work on audiobooks, which makes it look like Audible with the numbers rearranged. The difference that matters: an Audible Premium Plus credit ($14.95/mo) buys a title you keep after cancelling. An Everand unlock does not. If you are choosing between those two specifically, that is the deciding fact.
Cancelling and pausing
Kindle Unlimited cancels from your Amazon account settings and runs to the end of the paid period. Everand cancels from its site or app, and also lets you pause rather than cancel outright. Either way you lose borrowed or unlocked titles when the subscription ends — nothing you read on either service is yours.
If you're the one publishing the book
Getting into Kindle Unlimited means enrolling in KDP Select, which is a 90-day term and requires the ebook to be exclusive to the Kindle Store for that period. Print, audio and other formats are unaffected, so you can sell paperbacks and audiobooks anywhere. Everand takes non-exclusive distribution through the usual aggregators, so a book can sit there and on Kobo and Apple at the same time.
The trade is straightforward. Exclusivity buys you the largest subscription readership in English-language publishing. Going wide keeps every other store open. You cannot have both for the same 90 days.
Questions people ask
Is Scribd still unlimited? No. Unlimited reading ended for US subscribers through 2025 after a November 2024 announcement, and the legacy plan has been discontinued. Everand now runs on 1, 3 or 5 unlocks a month.
Is Everand the same as Scribd? It is the books-and-audiobooks half of the old Scribd. Scribd.com is now a documents and SlideShare service with its own separate $11.99 subscription.
Which is cheaper? They start at the same $11.99. Kindle Unlimited gives more reading for that money unless the specific books you want are Big Five titles Amazon doesn't carry.
Do either have free trials? Both advertise 30 days. Amazon periodically extends its trial to two or three months around Prime Day and Black Friday.
Can I read Kindle Unlimited books without a Kindle? Yes — the Kindle app on phone, tablet, desktop and browser. Included audiobooks play through the Audible app on the same account.
