Vidchat Review – An Honest Look at This AI Chat App

Before I tried Vidchat, I had a pretty simple question: would an AI chat app actually feel like a “companion,” or would it just spit out generic replies? I spent a few sessions with Vidchat over the last couple of days (I’m talking roughly 6–8 chat sessions, each about 10–20 minutes), and what I noticed right away is that it’s built for playful, flirty, low-effort chatting—not deep therapy-level conversations.

In my experience, the characters are the hook. You pick an AI persona, then the tone stays pretty consistent for a while. When I switched personas, the “vibe” changed noticeably. And yes—video calls are a feature, but they’re not the same “included” experience as text, so keep that in mind.

Vidchat Review

Here’s what I did when I tested it, and what happened.

Test setup (what I changed): I started by picking three different personas (one more playful/flirty, one that felt more romantic, and one that leaned into a “fun companion” vibe). I also tried a couple of different prompts: I used an open-ended question, then I asked for something more specific, and finally I tested whether the character would follow my “tone” for more than a few turns.

Chat example #1 (tone + continuity): I opened with something simple: “Hey, what are you up to right now?” On the playful persona, the reply came back in a chatty, teasing style, and it didn’t feel like it was just generating one-liners. After I followed up with, “Okay, then teach me your favorite way to spend an evening,” the character stayed in that same mood for several messages. What I noticed: it was pretty good at keeping the “persona voice” stable for around 8–10 turns before it started to drift into generic conversation territory.

Chat example #2 (flirting, but not always deep): With the flirty persona, I tried: “Be honest—do you actually like talking to me, or is this just your job?” The response read like it was leaning into the role (compliments, affectionate wording, a bit of playful banter). But when I pressed for something emotionally specific (“What would you do if I was having a bad day?”), it didn’t really go beyond the “cute” vibe. It wasn’t cold—it just didn’t have the kind of nuanced, human-specific empathy you’d expect in a truly deep conversation.

Chat example #3 (prompt specificity): I asked the romantic persona: “Give me a short ‘goodnight’ message, but make it feel personal.” That’s where Vidchat surprised me a bit—instead of a template, it tried to tailor the message to the tone of the chat. Still, if I changed topics abruptly (“Now switch to tech advice”), the persona would adapt, but the transition felt more like “new prompt, new answer” rather than long-term memory.

So, does Vidchat work? Yes—for what it’s aiming for. It’s a lightweight AI companion experience with a strong “character” focus. If you want something for entertainment, flirting, and casual conversation, it does that well. If you’re expecting a human-level back-and-forth with real emotional depth, you’ll probably feel the gap pretty quickly.

Key Features

  • AI companions with distinct personalities
From my testing, each character doesn’t just look different—the wording style changes too. One persona leaned playful and teasing, another felt more romantic, and another was more “friendly companion” than flirt. I’d pick a persona based on mood, and the chat tone generally matched that choice for multiple turns.
  • 24/7 text chatting (the “always on” feel)
I didn’t hit any awkward “come back later” limitations during my sessions. The app felt ready whenever I opened it, which is exactly what you want from an AI chat companion.
  • Interactive flirting and fun prompts
The app is clearly optimized for playful conversation. When I used prompts that leaned into banter, the characters responded with more engagement than I saw when I used more serious prompts. In other words: it’s better at “fun” than “heavy.”
  • Character visuals + descriptions
The companion visuals help set expectations. It’s not just a generic chat box—you’re picking a character with an identity. That matters more than you’d think. I noticed I got more “in character” results when my prompts matched the persona’s vibe.
  • Video call option (separate cost)
Vidchat supports video calls, but it’s not the same as included text. During my review, I treated video as an add-on because the pricing structure indicates video minutes are billed separately. If you’re curious, I’d try text first so you know which persona you actually like before paying for video.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Lots of characters, and the tone really changes
I didn’t feel like I was talking to the same assistant with a different name. Persona voice came through in how the replies were phrased.
  • Fun, responsive chat experience
When I asked engaging questions or leaned into playful scenarios, replies felt more “alive” than the typical robotic AI chat.
  • Easy to start
You can get into a conversation fast. No complicated setup, just pick a character and start chatting.
  • Great for passing time
If your goal is entertainment—flirting, light conversation, roleplay-ish vibes—it’s a solid fit.

Cons

  • Emotional depth isn’t where it needs to be
I didn’t get the kind of nuanced, human emotional reasoning you’d want for serious relationship conversations. It’s more “cute and supportive” than “deep and specific.”
  • Persona consistency can slip after several turns
In my sessions, characters stayed in their voice for a handful of messages, but after about 8–10 turns (depending on the prompt), the responses started to feel more general.
  • Video can get expensive if you use it a lot
Because video minutes cost extra, it’s easy to overspend if you jump straight into video without a plan.
  • Not really for professional or high-stakes use
If you’re looking for something you can trust with work decisions, legal advice, medical questions, etc., this isn’t that.

Pricing Plans

Pricing on Vidchat is fairly straightforward from what I saw while reviewing it: the main plan is listed at $7.99 per month for unlimited text conversations and full access to the characters. Video calls are billed separately at $1 per minute.

One thing I’d call out: I didn’t see a clearly advertised free trial during my check. Also, “unlimited” usually has real-world limits (like fair-use rate limits or practical caps), so if you’re planning to chat nonstop, it’s worth double-checking the fine print in the app.

If you’re deciding between text-only and video, my advice is simple: test the personas with text first. Figure out who you actually like. Then, if you want the video experience, you can spend minutes where it matters instead of paying while you’re still figuring out the app.

Wrap up

Vidchat is a fun AI chat app if you want playful companionship—especially if you enjoy flirty banter and switching between different AI personas. It’s quick to use, the character vibe is a real part of the experience, and the text chatting is engaging enough to keep me coming back for short sessions.

Just don’t go in expecting it to replace real human connection or consistently deliver deep emotional conversations. For that, it’ll feel a little “light.” But for entertainment and casual virtual companionship? Yeah, it does the job.
