Children’s book creator — story and pictures, written for a real age band
Tell Automateed the story you want — or upload the one you already wrote — pick an age band and a length, and the AI writes and illustrates every page of a complete children’s book. Don’t like one picture? Regenerate that single page. Then export a print-ready PDF and publish it.
Who is this book for?
How long should it be?
The same options you’ll see in the storybook creator — nothing staged.
Quick answer
Automateed’s children’s book creator writes and illustrates a complete storybook from your idea. You choose an age band (3-5, 6-8, 9-12 or teen 13-17) and a length (short 10-20, medium 20-30 or long 30-40 pages), add optional art directions, and the AI generates the story with a full-page illustration on every page. You can regenerate any single image, improve any page’s text with AI, then export a print-ready PDF for Amazon KDP or sell a web edition on the built-in marketplace. Preview is free with no credit card.
How the AI children’s book creator works
The storybook workflow is the most-used visual format on Automateed — 2,234 storybook projects have been created with it, and 2,152 of them were completed. Here is the flow behind those numbers:
Start with your story seed
Type a premise ("a shy firefly who is scared of the dark") — or upload the story you already wrote as a DOCX of up to 400 words and let the AI build the book around your words.
Set the age band
Choose 3-5, 6-8, 9-12 or teen (13-17). Vocabulary, sentence length and story complexity follow the band, so a bedtime book for a four-year-old reads nothing like a book for a ten-year-old.
Add art direction
An optional image-instructions field steers every illustration — "soft watercolor, warm evening light" or "bright crayon style" — and keeps the look consistent across the book.
Generate and review
The AI writes the story and illustrates each page. You review the whole book page by page in the editor before anything is final — and before you pay anything.
Edit like a picture-book editor, not a prompt engineer
First drafts are never the finished book — so the editor is built around fixing one page at a time instead of regenerating everything and hoping.
Regenerate one illustration
Every page has its own regenerate option with a custom prompt. If the fox on page 12 suddenly has the wrong scarf, you describe what you want and re-render just that image — the other pages stay exactly as approved.
Improve the words with AI
An improve-text tool rewrites individual page text on request — tighten a clunky sentence, soften a scary moment, or simplify vocabulary for the younger band. You can also just type your own words directly.
Text laid over the art
Page text renders as a clean overlay on the illustration in a friendly storybook font. An optional premium print edition goes further and paints the text directly into the artwork itself.

Print-ready PDF for KDP
Storybooks export as a laid-out, print-ready PDF included on every plan. Upload it to Amazon KDP as a paperback interior and design the cover with the built-in cover editor.
Premium print editions
Optional one-time print editions render the story text directly inside the illustrations: 5-8 pages at $9.99, 10-15 at $14.99 or 18-25 at $19.99 — a gift-book finish for birthdays and keepsakes.
Marketplace and pricing
Publish a readable web edition to the Automateed marketplace at your price — or free as a lead magnet. Plans run $25/month for 8 generations or $50/month for 30; a medium storybook uses 2.
Children’s book creator — FAQ
What age groups can the children’s book creator write for?+
Four age bands: 3-5 years, 6-8 years (the default), 9-12 years and teen (13-17). The band controls vocabulary, sentence length and story complexity, so the same premise produces a genuinely different book for a preschooler than for a middle-grader.
How many pages does an AI-generated children’s book have?+
You choose one of three lengths: short (10-20 pages, 1 generation credit), medium (20-30 pages, 2 credits) or long (30-40 pages, 3 credits). Every page gets its own full-page illustration alongside the story text.
Can I use a story I already wrote instead of an AI-invented one?+
Yes. Upload your story as a DOCX file of up to 400 words and the creator builds the illustrated book from your words. You can also edit any page’s text by hand afterwards, so the final voice stays yours.
Can I change one illustration without regenerating the whole book?+
Yes — this is the feature parents end up using most. Each page has a regenerate-image option that takes a custom prompt, so you re-render only the picture that missed while every approved page stays untouched.
Will my main character look the same on every page?+
The storybook workflow keeps the art style consistent across the book, and character continuity is generally strong. It is not a hard guarantee, so the practical technique is to repeat the character’s defining features in your image instructions and regenerate any page that drifts.
Can I pick the illustration style?+
Yes, through a free-text image-instructions field rather than a fixed menu — describe "soft watercolor with warm light" or "bold crayon-style drawings" and every page follows it. Free text is more flexible than presets once you know the look you want.
What file do I get at the end — and does it work for Amazon KDP?+
Storybooks export as a laid-out, print-ready PDF, included on every plan. That file uploads to Amazon KDP as a paperback interior; pair it with a cover from the built-in cover editor. A readable web edition can also be published to the Automateed marketplace.
Does it export EPUB for ebook stores?+
Not for storybooks. EPUB and DOCX exports apply to text-based ebooks and novels; illustrated storybooks are fixed-layout products delivered as PDF plus the marketplace web edition. For a Kindle edition path, see our Kindle kids book creator page.
Is there read-aloud narration for children’s books?+
No — honest answer. Automateed’s audiobook narration currently works on ebook-type projects, not illustrated storybooks. Kids’ books here are designed for print and screen reading, not auto-narration.
How much does it cost to make a children’s book?+
Preview free with no credit card. Paid plans are $25/month for 8 book generations or $50/month for 30, with top-ups. A short book uses 1 credit and a long one 3, so even the smaller plan covers several complete books monthly. Optional premium print editions (text painted into the artwork, 5-8/10-15/18-25 pages) are one-time purchases at $9.99/$14.99/$19.99.
What languages can I create children’s books in?+
Automateed supports 108 languages, so you can generate the same story in English, Spanish, German, French and most other markets — useful for bilingual families and translated editions.
Have real people actually published books made this way?+
Yes — 2,234 storybook projects have been created on the platform, 2,152 completed, and 198 published to public reader pages. Two live examples linked on this page: Connie Conquers Conversations (an educational Year 7 English storybook) and The Little Donkey (a classic picture book).
