Genre promise you must keep on the page
From the first pages, promise three things in a way readers can feel: 1) there is a threat with specific consequences (someone gets hurt, someone disappears, a case goes sideways); 2) the romance has a credible path to intimacy under pressure (the protagonists make choices, not just observations); 3) both protagonists contribute to resolving the mystery or surviving the danger. If the romance depends entirely on one character’s feelings while the other becomes a passive helper, the genre contract weakens.
